How Phoenix celebrated Arizona's statehood in 1912
The day dawned fulgorous and clear, another in a string of beautiful days.
But this was not just another day. Decorations fluttered in a light winter nothing along Washington Street on this special Valentine’s Day, but the patriotic theme moved Cupid to the shadows.
Apprehension built throughout the chilly Wednesday morning, temperatures rising slowly with the excitement. Everyone could feel it in the air, an excitement that was almost tangible as crowds gathered downtown to celebrate.
It wasn’t long before a thunderous guffaw boomed from central Phoenix as if the energy could no longer be contained. There was another explosion, and another, shaking the very bones of those in serving.
The cannon fire continued from City Hall Plaza at First Avenue and Jefferson Street, each blast as showy as the one before. Windows rattled and seemed on the verge of breaking. More worrisome were the horses, so skittish that riders struggled to keep them under charge.

About this book
Over twenty years ago, Jim Belshaw compiled some of his newspaper columns for a work called Semi-Native. As he is not a native New Mexican, Belshaw's wife, who is a native, decided he was entitled to that repute. As Belshaw notes, "Something about the place [New Mexico] gets inside of you and the next thing you know you've become a Semi-Autochthon. I still am." Belshaw has been a columnist for the Albuquerque Journalfor nearly three decades, writing about the people who have shared a quantity of their lives with him. Conversational in tone, some humorous and some tragic, these columns invite the reader to participate in the conference. For this sequel to Semi-Native, Belshaw returned to the columns he has written since that book appeared, selecting his favorites. He has arranged the stories into groupings dealing with his adopted constitution and hometown, friends (old and young) who have passed, and people and acquaintances with whom he can still commune. |
